Set Sketches/ Design

Initial Sketch

When creating this initial sketch I met with the Director to ask her what she would want in the design and if she had any special requirements.

3D Model Box

Model boxes are extremely important when designing the set for a theatre/entertainment piece. They help you have a 3D image to work from when explaining how your set works. they are also extremely important for the directors to have in the blocking stage so they have a visualisation of the set they can describe from.

When I first started my model box I spoke to the directors of the show and they gave me a brief to go from. I also familiarised myself with the script so that I could distinguish what was necessary to have in the set. For example we needed a taxi rank and a Salon.
Halfway through the process of making the model box some of the highs of the decking changed and the layout of the shops was altered slightly. After making these adjustments I was finally able to hand over the model box for the Directors to use.

Justification of Materials

In the Heights is a musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegra Hudes. The story is set over the course of three days, involving an ensemble cast of characters in the largely Dominican Republic neighbourhood of Washington Heights in New York City.

This area is fairly run down and is know for socio-economic distress because of the varied cultural society.

I started by researching previous shows and what styles colours and concepts they worked to achieve.

In this section I particularly like the black railings and the brick work. I also like the use of dark browns and blacks. They used various tones and shades to create a life like 3D effect.

In this version of In The Heights I like the silhouetted George Washington Bridge as it adds confirmation of the setting of the musical which in turn creates meaning and understanding for the audience. I will add this into the set design and festoons to add a stylised effect to the bridge like in this research image.

In this picture I liked the shop signs and the detailing of them. To create the signs you could use stencils to create  clean and neat lettering. This is good because if you were to just paint straight onto the signs it would be messy and uneven.

In this picture I really like the levels. For my set design I would like to combine the railings in the first image with a second level to create more exits and to create a dynamic and full performance space.
I also like the use of awnings and graffiti in this image as it adds detail and creates a more realistic setting for the audience to experience.
